Clubs, Enrichment & Extra-Curricular Activities

Because who your child becomes matters as much as what they learn.

Extra-curricular life at The Mead is not an optional extra. It is central to who we are and to who your child will become. We believe that every child deserves to find something that lights them up – a passion they can return to again and again, something that builds confidence, identity and joy far beyond the school years.

Our club’s programme is deliberately curated rather than simply accumulated. Every activity we offer is here because it has genuine value: delivered by someone expert, structured so that children can grow and progress, and chosen (in many cases) by our children themselves through the School Council. What we offer is not the longest list. It is the right one.

“We strive for every child to leave The Mead not only educated, but genuinely enriched: knowing what they love and what they are capable of.”

Our clubs change termly to meet the wants of the children

Chosen by Our Children

Many of our clubs exist because our children asked for them. The School Council plays an active role in shaping the extra-curricular programme — reviewing what is on offer each year and putting forward new ideas. This is not a token gesture. When children take ownership of their own enrichment, they arrive with energy, curiosity and commitment. It also means our offer stays genuinely relevant to the children in front of us.

Performing Arts

Ballet

Ballet is offered from Pre-Reception, taught by a specialist. Children are nurtured from the earliest age in technique, discipline and self-expression. Pupils are entered for formal examinations when they are ready — giving them a meaningful goal and a recognised achievement to be proud of.

LAMDA

LAMDA begins in Year 3 under specialist tuition. Through verse and prose, acting and public speaking, children develop the ability to communicate with confidence, clarity and poise. These are skills that transform a child — in the classroom, in an interview room, on a stage and in life. Pupils are prepared and entered for examinations when ready.

Drama Club & Dance Club

Drama and Dance give children a creative outlet unlike any other: one that demands courage, collaboration and imagination in equal measure. Children learn to inhabit characters, tell stories with their bodies and perform with conviction. Showcases and productions give every child a real audience and a real moment.

Choir

Singing together is one of the most powerful shared experiences a child can have. Our Choir builds musicality, listening, breath and confidence — and creates something genuinely beautiful in the process.

Music

Music at The Mead is taken seriously. Individual instrumental tuition is available across a full range of instruments: piano, singing, woodwind, brass, guitar and drums. We encourage every child to learn an instrument and to discover the rewards that come from sustained practice and growing mastery. Children who develop strong musical ability are supported to progress and, where appropriate, to pursue formal graded examinations.

Music Club brings children together to explore, experiment and perform – building an appreciation for music that goes far beyond any single instrument.

Judo

Judo is taught from Reception by an expert instructor — a commitment that reflects how seriously we take both the physical and the character-building dimensions of this discipline. Judo is not simply a sport. It teaches respect, resilience, self-regulation and the ability to get back up. Children are graded at the right moment, giving them a clear pathway of achievement and a genuine sense of earned progress.

Creative Arts & Craft

Art Club, Sewing Club and Wool Craft offer children the deep satisfaction of making something with their hands. In a world of screens and instant results, craft teaches patience, precision and the pride that comes from a finished piece. These clubs develop fine motor skills, aesthetic sensibility and creative confidence – and they produce children who know how to persist.

STEM, Digital Skills & Writing

Coding Club and Typing Club equip children with digital fluency that is increasingly non-negotiable in modern life — developed here at the right age, with the right foundations. Lego & Construction Club builds spatial reasoning, engineering thinking and problem-solving instincts in an entirely hands-on way. Children who might not identify as “creative” in a traditional arts sense often find their spark here.

Budding Authors gives young writers a dedicated space to find their voice — to draft, redraft, experiment and take pride in the written word. For children who love stories, language or simply ideas, this club is transformative.

Sport & Physical Activity

Sports & Running Club develops fitness, determination and the habit of physical activity — qualities that will serve children for life, not just on a school sports day. We believe in building a genuine and enjoyable relationship with exercise, not simply winning competitions.

Academic Enrichment

Chess Club sharpens strategic thinking, concentration and the ability to plan ahead — skills that transfer powerfully to academic work across every subject. Core Skills Club provides carefully targeted support and consolidation, ensuring that no child falls behind and every child has the foundations they need to flourish.

Beyond Clubs: Learning Outside the Classroom

Our enrichment programme extends beyond clubs. All our children experience trips and activities beyond the classroom across the year — indoor academic and leisure pursuits, outdoor education, fitness and sport, and activities designed to build expression, confidence and creativity. At Key Stage 2, the breadth of these experiences grows significantly, giving children memories and perspectives they will carry with them long after they leave us.

Our aim is simple: to give every child at The Mead a set of skills, interests and passions upon which they can build for the rest of their lives.
