Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11)

“Mead pupils consistently secure places at Kent’s most competitive grammar and independent schools, alongside a strong track record of scholarships.”

Pupils are stretched and challenged throughout Key Stage 2, ensuring those capable of the highest outcomes are fully prepared.

Strong outcomes. Confident learners. Ready for what comes next

Key Stage 2 is where Mead pupils turn strong foundations into outstanding outcomes.

Through a carefully structured and ambitious approach, children develop the knowledge, independence and confidence required to succeed at entrance exams, secure scholarships and move on to the right school for their future success.

Outcomes that speak for themselves

Mead pupils consistently achieve strong results, including:

  • success in the Kent Test (11+)
  • places at highly competitive grammar schools
  • excellent outcomes in ISEB Pre-Tests and independent school entry
  • scholarships across academic, creative and sporting disciplines

These outcomes are the result of sustained progress, not short-term preparation.

Why pupils succeed

At The Mead, success in Key Stage 2 is carefully built. We see every child as an individual and cater for each ability.

Academic excellence

Core skills in reading, writing and mathematics are extended and applied at depth, ensuring pupils are confident, accurate and able to think independently. Additional specialist subjects are taught in Year 4 including science and in Year 5, children move around by themselves to specialist teaching in science, RE, geography, maths and history on top of sports, drama, performing arts, music, PE, swimming and French.

Metacognition

Pupils are taught how to plan, monitor and evaluate their learning, developing the self-awareness and resilience that underpin high achievement.

Small class sizes

Every child is known, supported and challenged, allowing teachers to stretch high-attaining pupils while providing precise guidance where needed.

Preparing for 11+ and beyond

Preparation for 11+ and independent school entry is embedded within the curriculum.

Children develop:

  • strong subject knowledge
  • exam confidence and technique
  • the ability to think clearly under pressure

As an accredited ISEB Pre-Test centre, pupils’ complete assessments in a familiar environment and are well prepared for a range of senior school pathways.

The whole of Tunbridge Wells is our campus

Learning at The Mead extends far beyond the classroom.

Pupils make use of over 100 acres across Tunbridge Wells - including forests, performance spaces and sports facilities.

This real-world learning builds independence, confidence and adaptability, helping children become future-ready learners and citizens of our community.

A breadth of opportunity

Pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities that build both confidence and stretch capability.

Weekly sports fixtures and competitions include football, hockey, netball, cross country and athletics.

Children also take part in:

  • ISA music and performance opportunities
  • drama productions and orchestra
  • creative and cultural experiences

These experiences develop teamwork, leadership and resilience – qualities that support academic success.

Learning beyond the classroom

Our residential programme is a key part of the Key Stage 2 journey:

  • Year 3: Bushcraft and one-night residential
  • Year 4: Two-night activity centre experience
  • Year 5: Cultural trip to France, developing language and independence
  • Year 6: Mountaineering in the Swiss Alps

Each stage is carefully designed to build future ready skills.

Confident, capable and ready

By the end of Year 6, Mead pupils are:

  • thoughtful, fluent, imaginative readers and writers
  • confident mathematicians and problem-solvers
  • independent, self-aware learners
  • Kind and thoughtful global citizens.
  • well prepared for the next stage of their learning journey

They leave The Mead not only with strong academic outcomes, but with the confidence and mindset to succeed wherever they go.
