Why Competitive Sport Matters in Prep School?
At The Mead prep school, sport isn’t just an extra-curricular activity—it’s woven into the fabric of school life. With around 600 competitive fixtures each year, every child has the opportunity to compete in Netball, Hockey, Rugby, Football, Girl’s Football, Boys’ Hockey, Cross Country, Ballet, Judo, Table Tennis, Cricket and Athletics.
This term has been exceptional. Our U11A football team’s recent triumph at the ISA Regional Football Tournament at Lingfield College exemplifies what’s possible. The boys dominated the competition, winning five straight matches, scoring 20 goals whilst conceding just two and securing their place at the National Finals at St George’s Park (England’s training ground) in March. It was a performance showcasing skill, determination and true team spirit.

But football is just one part of our sporting story. This term, our rugby teams have developed courage and resilience through weekly fixtures. On the netball courts, players refine their teamwork and spatial awareness. Cross country runners push themselves across challenging autumn courses. The whole school participates in swimming, strengthening their water skills. Table tennis players have sharpened their tactical thinking in our newly launched competitive matches throughout the term.
We are an Independent School with a Strong Sports Programme
This wealth of opportunity is a defining feature of prep school education. We have the time, facilities and expertise to offer regular competitive fixtures across multiple sports. Every week, pupils experience wearing their school colours in competition.
The experience starts as young as Year 2. By Year 3 they are captaining teams and making decisions under pressure. This progression prepares children beautifully for secondary school, where they arrive match-ready and comfortable with competitive sport.
Beyond the Scoreline
Weekly fixtures teach children how to win graciously and lose with dignity. They learn to support teammates, respect opponents, and understand that effort matters as much as outcome. These lessons, learned on pitches and in sports halls, last a lifetime.
Delivering 600 fixtures annually requires significant commitment from our PE staff, the support of parents and our network of independent schools. This term we have hockey tournaments, table tennis tournaments, cross country races, netball matches, rugby matches and our footballers’ National Finals adventure. We remain committed to giving time to sport.
