Why Year 2 to 3 Are So Important?
Years 2 and 3 are a pivotal time at The Mead, as children lay the foundations for success and independence in the Juniors. In Year 2, children have transitioned out of early years and are taking their first steps toward thriving as confident, independent learners.

One of the exciting ways Year 2 children grow is through sport. They begin competing in fixtures against other schools, participating in fun tournaments in cross country, football and athletics. In Year 3, fixtures are weekly which allow children to challenge themselves and build teamwork, with opportunities in hockey, netball, rugby, girls’ football, athletics and more.

Performance and creativity also take centre stage. Year 2 children take on lead roles in a full-scale production at Trinity Theatre. This year’s show, Peter Pan will be a remarkable experience that builds confidence and gives them a taste of the performing arts from an early age.
Academically, Year 2 continue to develop core skills, becoming increasingly confident in writing, grammar, spelling, times tables, mental maths and wider mathematical concepts. This strong foundation ensures they are ready for the more independent challenges of Year 3.
Year 3 is all about growth and responsibility. Children experience a longer school day, including prep, tea, and a wide range of clubs to suit every interest – from sport to music, art, dance, drama and beyond. They also begin to take more responsibility and start residential overnight trips which build each year.
Together, Years 2 and 3 provide a vibrant mix of learning, creativity and personal development, giving children the confidence, skills, and experiences they need to flourish in their next stage at The Mead.
