World Book Day 2026
“Everybody get your broomsticks and jellyfish come over here” are overheard only on World Book Day. It is the one day of the year where the barrier between fiction and reality dissolves and school hallways transform into a living, breathing library.
Why We Celebrate
World Book Day isn’t just about the elaborate costumes or the frantic, last-minute hunt for a cardboard sword. At its heart, it is a global celebration of storytelling and literacy. Designated by UNESCO, it aims to encourage children (and adults!) to discover the magic of reading for pleasure.
At The Mead, reading isn’t just a scheduled lesson; it’s a shared heartbeat. Because our children read with adults every single day and are constantly immersed in a culture that prizes narratives, they develop an authentic, lifelong love for books. It’s no wonder, then, that World Book Day is such a massive celebration for us. Here is what we did on the day:
The Great Teacher Book Hunt: Children turned into detectives, hunting around the school to guess which hidden title belonged to which teacher’s “all-time favourite” list.
Creative Authorship: Budding illustrators and writers spent time designing their own book covers and original short stories.
Literary Scavenger Hunts: High-speed challenges that sent children searching for clues tucked away in the pages of beloved classics.
Books Beyond English: The magic even reached our numeracy lessons with maths-inspired book activities, proving that a good story can help us solve almost any problem!
Books Swap: Children brought in a book they have read and swapped it with another child.
Making Book Characters: Year 4 enjoyed making their favourite book characters
Making Jellyfish and pictures: Year 1 made their own Jellyfish to go alongside the story of the day
