CHOOSING A PREP SCHOOL? FIVE QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING WHEN YOU VISIT

Choosing the right prep school is one of the most important decisions you will make for your child. Beyond the first impressions, beautiful classrooms and welcoming surroundings, it is worth looking more closely at what a school offers, how it approaches learning and how it will prepare your child for the years ahead.

An Open Morning is an opportunity to look beyond the prospectus, meet the people who will shape your child’s education and understand what makes a school distinctive. Here are five questions worth asking when you visit a prep school.

1. How will my child be academically challenged?

A strong academic foundation begins in the early years. Ask how the curriculum develops as children progress through the school, how teachers recognise individual strengths and how pupils are encouraged to think independently, develop curiosity and that there is challenge for all.

Look for a school that combines high expectations with the individual support children need to succeed.

2. What do pupils go on to achieve?

Academic outcomes can offer valuable insight into a school’s approach to education. Ask about senior school destinations, entrance examination results and scholarship achievements.

It is also worth understanding how the school prepares pupils for their next stage, whether that is a selective grammar school, an independent senior school or another pathway.

3. What opportunities are available beyond the classroom?

A prep school education should extend well beyond academic lessons. Sport, performing arts, music, languages and creative opportunities all play an important role in developing confidence, resilience and a wider range of interests.

Ask how accessible these opportunities are to pupils and whether children are encouraged to discover and develop talents they may not yet know they have.

4. How well will my child be known and supported?

Children flourish when they feel happy, understood and confident in their surroundings. Find out how teachers build relationships with pupils, how pastoral care is embedded into everyday school life and how the school supports children as they grow in independence.

A nurturing environment and ambitious expectations should go hand in hand.

5. What makes the school distinctive?

Every school has its own character, ethos and approach. Ask what makes its educational experience different, how it connects with its local community and what opportunities children will experience during their time there.

The best way to understand this is to spend time in the school itself. Observe the interactions between teachers and pupils, look at the children’s work and imagine your child as part of the community.
