Staff Spotlight: Mrs O – Pre-Reception Teacher

Meet Our Pre-Reception Teacher: A Q&A with a Much-Loved Member of The Mead Family

This week, we’re shining a light on one of our longest-serving and most dedicated members of staff, Mrs O, our wonderful Pre-Reception teacher. With her warmth, creativity and wealth of experience, she has played a key role in shaping the early experiences of so many children at The Mead. We sat down with her to learn more about her journey, what she loves most about teaching in the Early Years and what makes The Mead such a special place.

How long have you been at The Mead?
I’ve been at The Mead since 1987, when Angela Culley founded the school. It’s been a privilege to grow alongside such a wonderful community over the years.

What inspired you to work in Early Years education and join The Mead?
I’ve always known I wanted to work with children. My mum worked in a local playgroup, and I would occasionally go along when I wasn’t at school. I absolutely loved it. Later, a Montessori teacher I worked with told me about a small school that was about to open – The Mead – and encouraged me to apply to be her TA. It felt so personal and collaborative right from the start. I still remember being invited for tea… and to bring a paintbrush to help get the classrooms ready!

What’s the most rewarding part of teaching Pre-Reception?
It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a child’s very first steps in education. I get to inspire their young minds, create a positive, nurturing environment and help them grow in confidence and curiosity. Seeing each child’s unique personality blossom and being part of their journey is a daily joy.

Can you share a funny or memorable classroom moment?
Oh, there have been so many! The children make us laugh every single day. I only wish I’d written them all down—there would have been enough for a best-selling book by now!

What’s your favourite activity to teach in Early Years?
Woodwork is my absolute favourite. It’s amazing to see the children’s ideas come to life. Beyond the joy of creating something with their hands, it builds fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and—most importantly—confidence. The pride they show in their finished work is just wonderful to witness.

What makes The Mead unique to you?
The Mead has always felt like a family. There’s such a strong team spirit, and everyone is dedicated to supporting each child’s individual journey. You hear laughter all around the school—children and staff alike—and in the Summer term, the sound of singing fills the corridors as everyone prepares for the Summer Show. It’s heart-warming.

What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I love walking my dog in parks or through the Ashdown Forest—especially if there’s a stream to follow. I also really value spending time with friends. My perfect evening would be seeing a show in London, followed by dinner and a stroll through the city. I also love exploring other cultures through food and city breaks whenever I can.

What skills or habits help children thrive when they start Early Years?
Independence is key. It’s so valuable for children to believe in their own abilities, to feel proud when they accomplish something on their own, and to build the confidence to try new things.

What are some common worries parents have about starting school, and how do you help?
New parents often come with lots of little worries—and that’s completely understandable. While we may have seen them many times before, for each parent, it’s a big moment. We make a point of always being available to listen and chat things through. It’s all about working together to find the best way forward, so both child and parent feel supported and confident.
