Subject Spotlight – French
French is an integral part of our curriculum, taught from Pre-Reception to Year 6 by our specialist teacher, Madam Sinead. Introducing children to a new language at an early age provides numerous cognitive and social benefits, laying a strong foundation for future learning and culture.

Starting French at a young age helps children to recognise keywords, phrases and sentence structures. Their brains are particularly receptive to language acquisition during these formative years, making it easier for them to develop listening, speaking and comprehension skills. Learning a second language at an early age can enhance problem-solving abilities, improve memory and increase creativity.
Madam Sinead’s approach to teaching French is interactive and engaging. Lessons are designed to capture children’s imaginations through play, props, music and songs. This playful and immersive method helps children feel more confident using the language, turning learning into an enjoyable experience.

Each week, children receive a small French homework task to reinforce what they have learned in class. These activities are carefully planned to consolidate their language skills, helping them retain and apply vocabulary in different contexts. The combination of in-class interaction and at-home practice ensures steady progress and encourages a love of languages from an early age.
Learning French at our school not only equips children with valuable language skills but also instils a curiosity for the wider world, preparing them for future opportunities in an increasingly globalised society.
