Pre-Reception at The Mead: Where Academic Ambition Begins

At The Mead, Pre-Reception is something more. It is the first year of a carefully structured programme that shapes how children learn, think and thrive throughout their time at the school.

More than a nursery

Pre-Reception is a full part of The Mead’s school system, not a separate childcare offering. Children are taught with the same care, ambition and attention to detail that runs through every year group, in an environment designed for the youngest learners. Every part of the day has a purpose, and nothing is left to chance.

Structured lessons from the start

Children in Pre-Reception take part in structured lessons that lay the foundations for their learning. This is where they begin their journey into reading, writing and numeracy. They start to recognise letters and sounds, form their first marks with growing confidence, and explore numbers.

The result is a smooth, confident transition into Reception. As Mrs Hunt, Reception teacher, explains:

“You can tell straight away which children have been through Pre-Reception. They arrive ready to learn, confident with their letters and numbers, and comfortable with the routines of the classroom. They hit the ground running.”

Specialist teaching

Pre-Reception children benefit from specialist teaching in subjects many schools reserve for older pupils. They enjoy dedicated sports lessons that build coordination, confidence and a love of physical activity. They begin learning French, and they take part in music lessons that develop listening, rhythm and expression. Learning from specialists at such an early age gives children a rich, broad start and a sense of curiosity that stays with them.

A dedicated space for play

Pre-Reception has a dedicated play space, designed for the youngest children, where they can explore, imagine and build friendships in a safe and stimulating setting.

Afternoons are given over to a range of enriching activities, including yoga, woodwork and ballet. These sessions let children develop creativity, resilience and physical confidence, and they discover new interests and talents along the way.

The right start

Pre-Reception at The Mead balances academic rigour and childhood joy. Children learn, play and grow within the school, supported by expert teachers, so they are prepared for what comes next and excited by it.
